Rose-Ann talks exclusively to TalkingWithHandsPiczo about her MBE, her role as a manager of a popular deaf club, her thoughts about the TWHP (Talking With Hands Piczo) website, and exciting news about what's to come for the Youth Club in the following months.
Rose-Ann, Congratulations on being awarded the MBE! How do you feel?
Thank you, I was very surprised and delighted. I feel excited because on the on 28th February 2008, I will be going to Buckingham Palace to pick up my MBE.
Talking with Hands has also received a number of other awards. Most notably one before my MBE the Queen’s Award for voluntary services. Northamptonshire Community Foundation have also given us an award in late November of last year for “Making things Happen”.
That's great, now lets talk about the Talking With Hands Youth Club that you have set up for deaf kids in Northamptonshire, what really inspired you to set it up?
We have a lot of very talented youth deaf youth people in Northamptonshire who were keen to meet up and do things together. They wanted to happen on a Saturday because young deaf people who go to school out of Northamptonshire, could also come and meet up, have fun and make new friends. These deaf youth people are keen to be able to mix with their own peer group and find out what other people are doing.
The club is growing because we have taken ideas that young deaf people
have and put them into action. The club is always willing to listen to new
ideas and if they are safe we try them. Northamptonshire Community
Foundation have been very helpful enabling us to make things happen.
What plans do you have for the Talking With Hands Youth Club in the forthcoming months?
Over the next few months Talking with Hands are doing lot of different things which will enable young people to develop their artist skills to gain an Bronze art award. People will have the opportunity to
learn how to sculptor both in clay and chocolate; as we do chocolate making. We will be visiting Cadbury World soon.
Young people will be able to make a short animation film. They will be able to learn about Chinese and both speak and write it. They will also learn the skills of drumming and BSL songs.
They will make a tapestry and a Mural about who they are and also about the old deaf club, what they can remember about it and what older members of the deaf community tells them about it.
Over next few months they will be learning skills in both dance and drama because they are going to be taught how to Mine. Also you can play pool it you like.
Wow, that's a lot, you are doing very well! What do you think of the Talking
With Hands Piczo website?
Talking with Hands website is great, It shows all the skills young people are developing. I feel it has given young deaf people the opportunity to see what going on and the courage to come a long and have a go.
It also to keeps a record of what is happening and it helps to remember people of all the funny things they do.
I think the Chat page is fantastic because it enables people to keep in
contact and exchange ideas, giving the youth deaf community a voice.
Also the web pages shows great skills of deaf youth people in
Northampton. We see that we have talented photography, journalist
and computer skills.
And lastly, have you got anything to say to all those deaf youths of Northamptonshire?
We want to encourage the deaf youth people of Northamptonshire to come and join it. Bring their friends with them. Also bring their ideas. It is their Youth club and they can come and have lots of fun and make lots of friends.
Thanks so much for your time Rose-Ann! See you very soon!
